International symposium on land use challenges in European metropolitan regions in Berlin
On 6 and 7 May 2026, the international symposium “Land use challenges in European Metropolitan Regions – exchanging promising spatial planning approaches” will take place in Berlin. Hosted by the Joint Spatial Planning Department Berlin-Brandenburg, the event addresses spatial planning professionals from across European metropolitan regions.
The symposium focuses on increasing land use pressures driven by housing demand, economic development, and ongoing energy, transport and climate transitions. At the same time, the concept of “no net land take” is gaining importance, raising new questions for planning and governance.
The event aims to facilitate exchange on innovative strategies and projects. Key topics include long-term spatial visions, instruments to reduce land take, planning for major investments, and the role of spatial planning in climate protection and the energy transition. Contributions will be provided by representatives from metropolitan regions such as Amsterdam, Lyon, Stockholm, Stuttgart and Berlin-Brandenburg.
The symposium will start on 6 May at 12:00 and end on 7 May at 13:00. It will be held at the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing. Participation is limited, and registration is open until 15 April 2026.
