We are happy to announce that the international working group (IWG) “Resilient metropolitan regions - Spatial Planning and Management for Urban Transformation” is going to start its work soon! The group consists of 12 experts on resilience, urban sustainable development, and spatial planning from Southwestern Europe and German speaking countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, and Germany). The IWG is going to be chaired by Prof. Joaquín Farinós Dasí, University of València, and Dipl. Geogr. Petra Schelkmann, Metropolitan Region of Rhine-Neckar Association. The organisational assistant of the group is Prof. Moneyba González-Medina, university of Madrid.

The main objective of the IWG is to investigate spatial planning instruments and institutional frameworks to strengthen just and resilient transformation of metropolitan regions. In order to achieve this, we are focussing on selected examples of metropolitan regions in Southwestern Europe. Our work is going to contribute to an expansion of both spatial and planning theory as well as practical planning knowledge and discourse.

The members of the IWG are going to have their Kick-Off Meeting on May 23rd and 24th in Valencia, Spain. The aim of the meeting is to explore the different perspectives and approaches on resilience and to identify the main challenges in spatial planning for the design of resilient metropolitan regions. On this basis, the members are going to determine the focus and key points of the transdisciplinary working group and develop a working programme.
