The ARL is organising a three-part webinar series as part of the RSA City and Regional Sustainability Transitions webinars. The first part will take place on 18 February 2025 on the topic ‘Perspectives on Social Housing from Different European Countries’.

Especially in the context of regional and urban development as well as sustainability, the socio-spatial transition of our time affects our society in the most diverse ways. The issue of equity is crucial to ensure that transitions are inclusive, fair and beneficial for all members of society.

This three-part webinar series emphasises the importance of equity in socio-spatial transition and focuses on three key areas: social housing, energy equity and urban planning for health equity.

We would like to invite all interested parties to the first webinar in the series:

Perspectives on Social Housing from Different European Countries

Tuesday, February 18, 2025 - 12.00 am (13.00 pm CET), online

Housing is an existential asset for citizens. Affordable and appropriate housing for all is the key to improving the general standard of living. It creates opportunities, while poor housing conditions restrict people's prospects. A policy that ensures inclusive, affordable and sustainable housing is essential for a resilient and just society.

Increasing inequalities, demographic shifts, changing lifestyles and cutbacks in social and public housing in Europe have challenged different national housing systems in recent decades. Despite regional differences, many European cities are facing a housing crisis and rising property prices.

This webinar offers a comprehensive, evidence-based reflection on past and new solutions to the housing crisis, its organisational framework, associated processes and the coordination of the evolving public housing sector. The speakers will present the respective challenges and perspectives from different European countries.

The speakers of the first part of the series are:

Hélène Roth, University of Clermont Auvergne, France
Hélène Roth has been a senior lecturer at the University of Clermont Auvergne and at the UMR Territories for about 15 years. Her research activities focus mainly on housing issues in small towns in the French context.

Marco Allegra, ICS-ULisboa, Portugal
Marco Allegra is Principal Investigator and chair of the Urban Transition Hub at ICS-ULisboa. He is actively involved in the EU-funded DASH project, which focuses on delivering safe and social housing. Together with his co-authors, he will be sharing insights from this work.
