A group of seven people wearing red conference lanyards stands around a large table in a modern conference room with big windows. On the table lies a large-scale, composite aerial map of an urban landscape. The participants hold printed documents, some are engaged in discussion while others listen. In the background, more people, chairs, and tables can be seen. In the bottom right corner of the table, there is a sheet of paper with a QR code and the logo of ARL

The Open Access book "Land Policies in Europe", supported by the ARL and originating from the ARL’s international working group (IAK) of the same name, was presented at the International Academic Conference on Planning, Law, and Property Rights on March 7 in Cardiff – in the week of its publication.

Around 60 to 80 international scholars from all over the world attended the book launch in Cardiff. In an interactive format, the editors – Thomas Hartmann and Andreas Hengstermann (both also heads of the IAK), Mathias Jehling, Arthur Schindelegger, and Fabian Wenner – organized an engaging discussion featuring case studies from six of the twelve countries represented in the book, together with the chapter authors.

The ARL has not only supported the IAK in its work since 2019 but also contributed to the book’s wide reach and visibility in the international community by covering the Open Access fee. The session in Cardiff clearly highlighted both the great demand for this academic work and how the book serves as a conversation starter on key issues such as land policy, housing shortages, urban densification, and land conservation – not only in academia but also in planning practice.
