Brand new: the Country Profile of Belgium authored by Jean-Marie Halleux and Peter Lacoere.

Belgium is an exciting case. Belgium is known for its linguistic differences. For 2,000 years, the country has been in a cultural divide between the Latin and Germanic worlds. Therefore, Belgium has three official languages: Dutch, French and German.

Belgium is a federal state composed of three regions and three communities.
A community is characterised by its culture and its language, whereas a region is characterised by its territory. Against this background, the Brussels-Capital Region, the Flanders Region and the Wallonia Region are responsible for the territories of Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia respectively.

In addition to the federal institutions, the regions and communities also have their own legislative and executive bodies. This complexity is at the same time very interesting but also challenging for planning.
